Trekking and hiking in Mauritius offer incredible opportunities to explore the island's natural beauty and stunning landscapes. From mountains and valleys to forests and coastlines, Mauritius has a diverse range of hiking and trekking destinations. Here are some key highlights and destinations for trekking and hiking in Mauritius:
Located in the southwest corner of Mauritius, this national park covers a vast area and is home to rare forests and endemic species. You can embark on short or long hikes with the assistance of guides to discover the park's natural heritage, panoramic views, and refreshing rivers for a swim.
As the third-highest mountain in Mauritius, Le Pouce offers a rewarding trek with a peak reaching 812 meters. From the summit, you'll be treated to a 360-degree view of the island, including the northern small islands, the capital Port Louis, and the high grounds of Plain Wilhems. It is known as 'The Thumb' peak, and its climb is attributed to Charles Darwin.
This trek takes you to the highest mountain in Mauritius, standing at 828 meters. Along the trail, you'll have a beautiful viewpoint to admire the scenic beauty of the south and west coasts, including the turquoise blue lagoon and the island of L'ile aux Benitier.
Located on the way to the east, this water reserve offers a different vegetation ecosystem compared to the coastal areas. A trail through the reserve takes you across rivers, forests, and hills, providing breathtaking views of Lake La Nicoliere and the Northern islets. Keep an eye out for wild monkeys and bats in the late afternoon.
This excursion takes you to a peak at 780 meters, offering an impressive panoramic view of the entire island. The trek involves traversing basalt rock and occasionally venturing through dense vegetation. From the top, you can admire Curepipe, Vacoas, Quatre Bornes, Rose Hill, Beau Bassin, and les Pailles, as well as Trois Mamelles, Rempart, Tourelle de Tamarin, and the iconic Morne Brabant mountain.
Located on the west of the island, this atypical solid mass consists of three distinct sections, peaking at approximately 500 meters. The climb to the central peak is divided into two parts, with the second part being more exposed. The panoramic view from the top is awe-inspiring, and the climb takes around three hours to complete.
These magnificent waterfalls are the highest in Mauritius, with a drop of almost 300 meters. The trek takes you down into the impressive canyon, where you can explore each waterfall and its natural basin. The path can be steep at times, but you'll have the opportunity to swim in the water or enjoy a natural massage under the cascades. Full-day and half-day trips are available.
